I have been looking at installing a factory for remote start module. I can’t seem to find any info on installing a new unit. I would assume that I would just have to plug in the module in the factory location. I don’t even know where its suppose to go. The ford website says $365 installed. I would hope they would just sell me the unit alone so I can just do it myself and save some cash.

Thanks,
Tad Murphy

Could probably be done but I know when I bought my 07 ranger new, the salesmen said I would probably be happier with aftermarket as the range was pretty poor on the 07 OEM remote start. I ordered from factory so installation wasn't an issue. Just some food for thought.

Yea I was looking into those. Defiantly better range but I like the idea of plug and play from factory and modifying the vehicles wiring as little as possible.

I also read I may have to go to the dealer to get something coded so it works with my truck, is this true?

You need a bypass module that sometimes needs a key installed in it so the transceiver will work. You also need to cut into a half a dozen wires or so. Its not too bad if a guy is good with a soldering iron. I use one of those little butane ones when ever I install one. Same with car stereos. Pisses off the guys that have to take them out though.

Interesting, is that key what I'll need from the dealer? That's nice you use the butane. Don't see many people with one. I love mine and am pretty familiar with wiring/soldering so that Doesent scare me. I just wanted to keep things reliable.

Just a spare key that has been programmed. An eBay one with the transceiver chip will work fine. You just need 2 keys to program it. Either that or I think a cheap Walmart clone key will work too.

I'm looking into a remote starter also...im gonna go with a viper, it has the options to control it from my BlackBerry (or any other smartphone) gps tracking and all. food for thought

That’s the one thing that sucks for me is I only have 1 key. And those little guys are expensive these days with the chips and what not.

I do like the viper systems with the 2 way and long distance.

I only had one key. Bought a second off ebay and had the shop program it. Cost me about 75 bucks in total. Once I had that second I programmed up I ordered up 2 more and did them myself. Only had to have them cut at the local locksmith.
