I like my new warns. however .... the installation sucked. i got one side done in like 10 minutes, plus the time it took to run to the store for bearings which we ended up returning. second side took about ... 6 hours ? the key was stuck, so my dad tried to chisel it a bit. then we tryed some more. then we used a drill. finnaly we found our dremel and used a diamond blade. the dremel part took about .... 30 seconds and the key FINNALY came out.

well theres my story. heh.

also i have a question:

I put my hubs on and drove a bit to test them out and they seem fine. Except that it almost sounds like a rubbing sound. It sounds like it could be normal, but i'm not sure. I might have over tightened the coversion kit piece that goes closest to bearing. but that doesnt make sense since it would sound like that all the time, not just when the axles were engaged.

more i think about it, the more i think its normal, but i still figured i'd ask =/

Thanks,

one more thing, when i turn, it feels like the joints in the front are binding. I figured there'd be some, but its quite a bit, even when turning a not so sharp corner. if its not normal, then i'd assume its because they've been broken for a while and not used.

Any time you turn on dry pavement, it will hop or shimmy a bit. A good fix for this is: don't do it. :-)

It is very hard on the 4x4 to have in on when the wheels can't slip, at least on the older models.

A little hum when the 4x4 is engaged is normal, too.

ok, thanks :) i usually wont have it on dry pavement, but i was testing them out to make sure they worked properly

one more question, is it ok to have the axels engaged on dry pavement without 4x4 on ?

Yes

Yes, You can run with the hubs locked. You can shift into and out of 4wd when you need to. I wouldnt do it all the time it adds wear and tear to the front, prob decreases the gas milage also. But its not going to hurt anything.

Just thought Id jump in.

Correct, your mileage will decrease significantly. you will be turning(and wearing) alot of parts unneccessarily. Best to keep them unlocked unless needed. But then of course, you will need them when they are not locked in - Murphy's Law!

yeah, a while ago when i asked about them, someone said that when your going somewhere, like a ski resort or somthing, that you just lock them before you go. i dont plan to leave them on at all, i was just wondering if it was the hubs being locked or the 4x4 being engaged that wasnt good on dry pavement

thanks,

There is another way to get the lock nut off it the key gets stuck (the lock nut moved slightly and dug into the key so it wouldn't come out). Just hook up a big Breaker bar to the sokcet and turn it. The nut will crack and then you can get the key out of it.. This does destroy the nut and key but you won't be using those again anyway if your changing to the Warn Manual hubs..

wouldnt you risk ruining the threads ?

The threads were a lot stronger than the nut was.. I wouldn't recomend this for routine maint. but it was safer than trying to cut the nut off.

ahh, yeah, i risked drmeling the threads. also it created a lot of metal shavings. but i dont think its too bad

I looked on 4 wheel parts and they had the standard warn manual and the premium hubs. I don't really like the way the standard looks but they didn't have a listing for the premiums for an explorer. Do I just have to suck it up and get the ugly ones or do they have the premiums for the explorer?

nope phil. they dont offer the premiums for us. the standards for us have a different type of connecting to our front ends than regular premiums

that sucks!

heh, offroading isnt about looks :)

whats funny is, every single lifted truck that i have seen out side the local offroad shop has been clean as can be.

real trucks also have body damage....

damn right :)
