The first time it happened I thought it was slipping; it was not.
When pulling away from a stop, it felt like I was suddenly pulling an extremely heavy load. The engine was working, but not revving up. I mashed the pedal to make it across the intersection, at which time the tranny felt like it down-shifted into 1st, then worked normally.
The sensation was like when you start out in second, only much more pronounced. My sense is that it was stuck in 3rd gear, then shifted down when I tromped it. I'm thinking it could be a worn or malfunctioning solenoid.
Does this sound like a possibility? Has anyone here had a similar experience?
It is a '96 Exploder 4.0 OHV 4WD with 120k on the clock. Both times the tranny was warmed up but not hot. No DTCs were found. A fluid and filter change was done around 2000 miles ago. It has worked flawlessly until now.
