I have a 98 Explorer and the washer pump is intermettant. When it stops working, I get part way through my diagnosis and it will start working again. When it is inop. I don't hear a relay switching, but I think that is done inside the gem anyways. My question is how common is it for a multi function switch to cause this?

I would check the voltage to the feed wire at the pump. Then you can see if the pump is getting a constant 12V when you switch it on, or if the signal to the pump is intermittant.

It might just be the pump or the connection at the pump.

Now I have replaced 3 of those damn multi function switches in Gen II explorer's lately for a couple of different problems. I would not be surprised if yours is bad and causing the issue, but instead of throwing $$$ at it testing is always best.

Yes, that would make sense, but by the time I get my meter and test light, it starts working again. When I give it back to my father in law, it won't work for a day or two. Since I could not hear the relay when it did act up, I started to suspect the switch. I have repair this problem in a Taurus and it was the gem. I hope it isn't my problem on this truck. thanks :can:
