water pump

Has anyone replaced their water pump in an early explorer? I have the time to do it myself but want to know if there are any shortcuts or helpful hints on this. Anthing would be appreciated. Thanks, Matt

I'm about to have my mechanic change mine as it squeals very badly. I'll be watching when he does it so I'll let you know if there is anything worthwhile mentioning.

Actually I started to mine tonite. It really wasn't too bad. The biggest pain was getting the fan clutch off. Although when I went to put it together again the pulley didn't fit onto the pump. the center hole in the pulley is just the slightest bit smaller so it doesnt seat properly on the pump. I've given up for tonite. I'll probably have to do some filing tomorrow morning.

It fairly easy.
Just make sure that you use a gasket sealer in addition to the gasket that the pump comes with. In addition, try tightening several bolts at the same time, as opposed to tighting one by one very tightly. This will ensure an even bonding between the gasket sealer and the metal.
