depends. some comes with adhesive, and as long as you properly clean the surface and keep pressure on it, its fine. if you want extra confidence, you can grab some weather strip adhesive at a parts store.
For a 1st gen all you need to do is pressure fit the weatherstripping in the channel. No adhesive, no scrapping anything. The interior panels hold it secure once tightened down.
Took all of 30 min for all 4 doors.
