Been a while with no issues with the '98 Explorer, but got one now. For several months now, I have been hearing a strange whining sound from the rear of the truck when I take off from a stop. After the truck started rolling, the noise would dissapate. Now, when starting from a stop, I still get the noise AND the brake light, not the ABS light, comes on then goes off when rolling. The emergency brake seems firm and returns to the correct position when released. Could the EB be binding at the rear wheels or what plan of action should I go after?
I just hit 300,000 KM and am hoping to get a few more out of it, even with $1.25 per litre gas.

The brake light can only be engaged one of two ways--by pushing down the parking brake pedal, or by not enough brake fluid.

In order for the parking brake to light the brake light, the pedal has to be pushed down. That's where the switch is.

You may want to check and make sure there is enough brake fluid in your reservoir, just be careful not to overfill it! ;)

Thanks Jackal. You were absolutely right regarding the brake fluid level. It was way down. Need to hit Canadian Tire in the AM. Dot 3 or Dot 4, I can't remember but I will look it up.
Now, would that have anything to do with the whining sound from the rear too?

If it is way low on fluid you may have a leaking wheel cylinder. This will make the shoes swell and make a funny noise. Well this could be true if you have rear drum brakes :D
