so i'm driving around today, and i stop at a store to drop off my friend, when i go to turn away from the curb i hear a not nice grinding noise, it almost sounded like the tire was rubbing terribly on something, so i stop and start going again, same noise starts up again

so i put it in park i get out and look underneath the front-end, i thought i saw some oil on the axle and perhaps some in the wheel-well, and i'm just thinking "great i ####ing broke something in the axle"
so i get back in it and start going again and it is still making the horrible noise, so i turned the wheel back and forth and it didn't stop,

so i stopped, put it in neutral and i put it in 4wd,

then i went forward a couple feet, no noise,

then i took it out of 4wd and drove it around and the noise was gone!

does that sound like one of the hubs just kicked in for no reason!

what kind of damage can that cause!

so anyway i'm thinking that i want to get rid of the auto hubs and put in Lock outs,

how much does a regular pair cost, like a set of Warn hubs?

One of your HUBs was trying to lock which is the noise you were probably hearing..The noise can vary, but as soon as you engage 4x4 mode the hubs will be locked and the noise gone... I don't belive this will cause any major damage, but if it keeps happening you should take off the hub to take a peek.

thank you,

this is the only time it has happened since i've had it

from what i hear those damn auto hubs aren't very good
so i'll probably end up putting on lock outs

I've also read that packing the hubs with grease is bad since it preloads the hubs which then try and lock. My auto hubs are original, and tend to make a little noise whenever taking sharp turns...I am planing to pick up Manual hubs from Warn. I think you can pickup the complete setup for less than 1 autohub..
