I have a new Kenwood Head Unit, and a 10" Sub and Box, but basically need to know what Amp would be best for my Sub and my (4) 5x7 200W Infinity Speakers? I have a 600W Amp that is older, but I think I may need something newer. Please help!

Quick amp lesson:

1st thing to know: Watts don't matter, for anything. You need to look at watts RMS power on both subs and amps. If your sub says it needs 150 watts RMS (at 4 ohms, or 2, or 1) then you look for an amp that provides that power, at a low THD (distortion rating).

Same with the door speakers, except that since they are just 5x7's, and not components, your kenwood head unit should have a powerful enough amp built into it to power them without any problem. I wouldn't run a multichannel amp just for those.

So you really just need a decent sub amp. Remember to look for the THD rating when you are shopping around. Visit crutchfield.com for good deals. They have an outstanding selection. Be wary of cheap amps though. Old is not necesarily a bad deal, as long as the power ratings are right for the subs, but cheap is. Post the model number or specs for the sub and your amp here.

There's nothing wrong with amp'ing 5x7s, as long as they're nice ones. You won't NEED to, but at the same time you don't NEED to have a system at all. Depending on what kind of Sub it is that you have, You might want to look into a 5-Channel amp. That way you won't need an amp for your sub and an amp for your speakers. They're expensive and don't put out a lot of power for the sub though.

Like ICU said, post the model numbers or specs and we'll be able to get a better idea of what you're running and what you'll need.

the jbl 755.6 or the equivalent infinity amp (same amp different cosmetics)

The JBls are prettier(IMO) and you can stick a specially designed neon in them. Infinity stuff looks more upscale though.

Ok, here are the specs on my amp...

Its a Koiler XM-8686

XM-8686 C/W
MAX OUTPUT POWER (2OHM): 150W X 4 = 600W
POWER OUTPUT: 60W X 4 @2 OHM (240W) LESS THAN 0.5% THD
50W X 4 @4 OHM (200W) LESS THAN 0.3% THD
BRIDGED 120W X 2CH @4 OHM
VARIABLE LOW PASS FILTER
VARIABLE HIGH PASS FILTER
TRI-MODE SPEAKER CONNECTION READY
BASS BOOST CIRCUIT (3/4 CHANNEL)
LOW & HIGH LEVEL INPUT
MOSFET DC-DC SWITCHING POWER SUPPLY
LED INDICATED POWER STATUS
AUTO POWER ON/OFF BY REMOTE

You'd probably be better off running your door speakers off that than a sub. Eitherway, .5% THD is a high rating. That means there's going to be a decent bit of distortion with that amp. Subwoofers really aren't meant to be run off of multi-channel amps like that (where you'd basically have to bridge all 4 outputs to get the power you need). Yes you can bridge the outputs and it can work, but they invariably do better with a dedicated subwoofer amp. The 50-60 watts RMS for 4 channels that it does provide though should be about right for door speakers, if you want to go through the process of rewiring all your doors and using that amp. Its your call.

Bottom line: scrap that or use it for doors, and get a sub amp. Just my thoughts.

Ok cool. Thanks for the help man. Im either A.)Going to wait for the Kenwood Reciever Installation to see how well it does in Amping my Speakers (Im not looking for a blow-me-away-system) And if that works, Ill run that amp completely for the sub. If Im not happy, Ill run that amp to speakers and get a seperate amp to sub.

thanks for the help man! I appreciate it. Im learning this stuff slowly
