Here is a Question for the tech group. I have added two sets of 55 watt lights to my truck but I am unable to find out what amperage my alternator is. There is a number nine stamped on it but no other numbers to cross reference. The truck is a 2000 XLS with power doors, windows, rear defog, and factor fog lights. I have found listings for stock of 75/113 amps and 52/75 amps. I can check to see how much I am drawing but I would like to know the limits.

PLEASE HELP!!!!

SOHC, right? you got the 130 amp alternator. the 95 amp ones is for the OHV.

Nope, I think the XLS has the OHV V-6 in it.

Thanks

Tbomb thank you that is what I am looking for. I do have the OHV for the XLS but is there some way that I can tell for sure? I am thinking of the 9 is 95 amp and the 13 being 130amps or some thing like that. I don't mean to doubt your word but putting in some more lights and 'aux' equipment I would hate like hell to miss judge the amperage and find out in the middle of nowhere with a blown diode pack. Is there some website that would definately list this?? The local ford dealer has decided to hire idiots so I trust their word about like a chevy mechanic's

why dont you try calling a napa or pep boys and ask them which one you need; if you imply that youre going to buy it from them, theyll help you out - just say you wanna know if they have it in stock.

by the way, i think you might be able to hook up the 130 amp alternator to your ohv anyway...i think.

Thank you that is what i needed to know!!
Now to max out the electrical system and clamp on amp meter it and see what I get.

How can you tell which amp alternator you have? Stock, mine was a 95 amp one...but I think it's been replaced by the previous owner, but I don't know that for sure.

Anyway how can I tell if its 95 amp or 130 amp?

go right down to autozone and have them test it.
they'll hook up this do higgy and you'll start your car , rev the engine, then they will tell you how much juice it puts out....then you'll know :)
