If your looking for one on its first transmission, it won't be for long. Actually, that applies to whatever transmission its on. I'm on number 4, but then I've got over 200,000 miles on it. And other than the transmissions, nothing has died from anything other than normal wear and tear.

Look at wear patterns

of the front tires. It was common for these to have alignment problems. The radius arm bushings for the front wheels are often bad. The one by the cat converter just under the passenger seat goes first from heat. Check to see that the 4WD shift motor still works.

my tranny is fine so far 175k

Problems I've had

arm rest $30 DIY
fuel float $4 DIY
Auto Hub failure 185 DIY
Mass Air Flow Sensor (clean it yourself diy)
seal between engine and trans $105 - aamco
Air condensor $300
ball joint - drivers side

not bad for 175k miles

breaks every two years - I commute 25k per year.

DUHHHH

Brakes not breaks.......:p

do the 95+ models use the same type tranny? how is maint on the 6cly engine? seems pretty like a stout motor from what i hear. not too crazy about the engine bay size though.

No, the 2nd Gen. Explorer use the 5R55E, which is a 5-speed autotragic transmission which is still an A4LD, but is a bit stronger, and more reliable. I don't know if all of the OHV V-6s had 5Rs, but I know the SOHC V-6 always has used it.

4WD shift Motor
****tty auto Hubs (no biggie)
valve clatter (not biggie)
exhaust leaks (muffler rust)
pull handles on door might come off (mine havent)
MAF (just clean it out)
Tranny (ur F'd)

LMAO Pocono lou...I was just thinking that mine breaks alot more often than that! Unfortunately it's like every time I shut the door, lol.

My turn to say DUHHHHH

sorry poconosms1...dont have any idea where the lou part came from...guess i was laughing too hard.

when I realized the freudian slip, I started laughing too....:D

Another problem on the first generation explorers is the intake manifold gasket. I sell alot of them at the auto parts store i work at and have personally replaced mine also at 145,000. Big and messy job, but can be done, but if it means anything to you, i sell alot less explorer parts than i do blazer and GC's parts. :thumbdwn:

Do a search for a thread titled "high mileage Explorers." That should give you an idea about the common problem areas. As people have said, the trans is the big issue. The 4.0 is virtually bulletproof with proper maintenance. If you are interested, mine is Dead Link Removed

If you are looking into a 91-94, then go with a 94.

The 91 was the first year, so small things like single cupholders, factory trailer wiring, and little other things were refined by 94.....:D

You mean there's a difference in the trailer wiring? Never noticed a problem with that.

The single cup holder is annoying - I replaced mine with a dual cup holder from a '95. Fits perfectly.

There was some minor beefing up in the tranny for the 93's and 94's from what I understand.

I need to do the intake gaskets on mine here at 145K but it runs fine otherwise. Still getting 17 - 19 mpg on my usual tank. MAF gets cleaned every once in a while (once a year?) but it's simple to do. I also have some valve clatter but it hasn't seemed to do anything bad yet

trans
fuel pump(3)
battery- blew up under the hood. kinda scary

thats about it, explorers are great vehicles

yeah ...um...about the trany

after you make this purchase........ remove the trans and have a proficient machine shop extend and weld the driveline to the flex plate. You will have years of happy service after this mod.

Well, by 94 at least, they added special relays on all X's for non-optioned factory trailer wiring, and holes in the rear bumper for chains.......
