I have an 04 ST. What chassis is that built on ? Is it a Ranger, or F-150 frame?

The Explorer is known as a Ranger Based Vehicle(RBV). All 4.0L Rangers will have pretty much the same frontend components as a 1st Generation Sport Trac. But, the rear part of the frames is where they will differ greatly.

how much difference is there now with the second gen ST i know they added IRS but is that it?

It uses the basic suspension of a Gen3/4 Explorer. It moved away from the Ranger suspension.

Totally different, front and rear both.
Your '04 Sport Trac has basically the same chassis as a 1995-2001 Explorer. The major difference from a Ranger in the rear is that Rangers are sprung-over and Explorers are sprung-under, also the Explorer rear axle is a little wider than a Ranger's.

I would say that 3rd Gen Explorers and 2nd Gen Sport Tracs are in the league of their own now.

i thought my 01 sport is a ranger chassis am i right or am i wrong

Your front suspension is the same as a Ranger but the rear is different and your wheelbase is shorter.

thnx johnny
