i'm just wondering what would be a good exhaust system to get for my 4.0 V6. the current setup is the side swept stock system. i would like to spend maximum 300$ and basically i'm more interested in the tone than the actual hp gains. i was looking at a gibson one for around 250$ but im just wondering if there are any reasonable alternatives.

Go to Pep boys pick up a cherry bomb or a flow master. Take a sawsall or a a jigsaw with a metal cutting blade, cut out the old muffler and slide on the new one and clamp it. Run you around $40 and give you a horse power boost as well as a throaty tone.

It all depends on what you like. In my opinion, loud is NOT better. No way, not by a long shot. For one I think loud v6s just plain sound like $h^t, but also, who wants to deal with all that noise when your driving for a few hours?

If you want more flow and an aggressive noise, I'd find a good muffler shop and tell them exactly what you want, and if they're good, they'll make you happy. If not, I'd go with no louder than a Flowmaster Deltaflow 50 series. Personally, on my old 91 v6 I had a singal generic Turbo muffler with dual outlets and dual 2 1/4" pipes with Borla round intercooled tips. It looked nice, sounded aggressive under acceleration, but under normal driving was barely noticable. Plus it only cost me around $225 total, including installation. (the most expensive part was the two Borla tips, $40 each.)

Do yourself a favor and don't ruin your truck by making it too loud. I can't imagine you'd be happy with it that way. Of course its your truck not mine, but you asked for advice and thats what you got! :D

I just had a MagnaFlow Stainless put in today and I love it. You can't really tell at idle, which I like, but when you hit the gas it really comes to life. I also had a straight out tip installed. The tip looks like the stock, on an '01 Sport, but is polished and 3" round. I will be taking some pics tomorrow.

Almost forgot, the total for the job was $180.

Sounds like you made a good choice. Good price too.

Flowmaster Delta 50 with 2.5" pipe.

Total cost $220.

Thanks. Interestingly enough, the original price quoted for the muffler was 150(possibly included the labor) but on the receipt it was only 90. It was 45 for labor so that still doesn't equal 150. The remainder was for the tip and taxes.

Here pics of the new exhaust tip and what the stock looked like.
