My headliner only in the front seat area looks like it is coming apart or something. The rest of the headliner is fine and no signs of any of this condition.

What is going on??

Looks like improper cleaning like a sharp edge on the vacuum cleaner nozzle.

Just a guess

Fishing poles in the cargo area?

no to both.

Can clearly see some water damage. Maybe the moisture is breaking down the foam and material. Find out if there is a small leak somewhere or where that moisture came from. Time to pull it and recover.

Its old and tired.
I've got a 96 xlt 5.0 that also has headliner cracks in it. Small and only 2 or 3 cracks in random locations, all forward. I think the thing just ages in the same way that vinyl gets old and cracks.
I've avoided touching mine in any fashion and it has not gotten any worse, but its nowhere near as bad as that. Other than that an excellent interior except from where womans butt is beginning to wear on the driver seat edge as she wallows... er, slides in and out.
I wonder how those things are replaced. Not a body guy so I'm sure that one is beyond me.

Strange that this is only happening in the front seating area, not in the back seat area or cargo area.

Stop climbing over the front seats to get to the back seats. your feet are kicking the headliner!
