i have a 1997 xporer sport and when i take off foward fast it makes a sound like klunk klunk klunk...its really rough, and going in reverse its worse..it sounds like im going to break somthing soon...but its only when i take off fast..

im thinking it could be the front CV joints...if somone thinks it is, how would i rebuild them?..

and if i were to remove them, could i still drive around for awhile?

Thanks

The first thing I would check are the U-Joints in the rear driveline. I doubt its the CV joints since they typically only make noise when they have power going to them (in 4wd) and the wheel is turned. On a side note, you can not remove the CV axles and drive the vehicle, unless you dissassemble the outer CV joint and reinstall the stub shaft in the hub.

k thanks for the info..

i took the tire off today just to see if anything happend when i turn the wheel..

all i hear is a sqeeking from the ujoint one the driveshaft coming from the transfer case..

should their be slack when i turn the wheel in the oppsite direction then back again?

i think it might be the cv joints tho, because today i took off on the highway and notic the steering wheel vibrating until 70 or when i let off the gas

Are you on wet pavement, dirt road or slippery pavement? May be your 4WD kicking in.

"Klunking" noise coming from the front diff on heavy acceleration is normal, when in auto 4x4.
But I would go over the driveline just to be on the safe side.
