I know in 97 they introduced the 4.0 SOHC engine but besides that they all look the same to me. Did they make changes during these years?

there are no MAJOR changes but there are a few minor ones. For instance the 98 doesn't have an underhood light

The torsion bar mounts are started being bolted on in '98 instead of welded on.

i think the 98+ have fewer options because they tried to keep the price the same, so they degraded quality. but the sohc engines are better then the 97 model. i would still rather have a 98+ though because i like the back design and the changes they made werent that big, most of them were small cost cutting ones

They also changed the front and rear bumpers a bit. The rear hatches are different. The black pillars on the hatch door on the 95-96 are painted body color on the 98+. They also changed that stupid flourescent third brake light (that costs a small fortune to fix WHEN it stops working) to LEDs on the 98+. Different rims were offered. That's about all I can think of right now.

The 95, 96 models have 2wd,4Auto, 4Lo.
The 97+ models are 4Auto, 4Hi, 4Lo.
Also on the 95,96 models, they have a vacuum engaged front axle where as the 97+ models the front axles are engaged from the Transferrcase.
The 95-97 models share the same frame, which is different than the 98+ models. This has to do with the rear torsion bar brackets.

No glove box light or lights on the bottom of the front doors in my 98 as opposed to my 95.
