This afternoon, I was poking around the underside of the dashboard, when I saw that thing that was just bolted there, there was no wires going to or from it, and I couldn't see any loose wire hanging around.
It's about 2" across and has 7 connectors on the side. No distinctive marking besides the fabrication date and a serial number.
Anybody has an idea of what it might be and wether I should plug something in it or not ?

the only thought that came to my head is something to do with the horn. But someone probably knows for sure.

Looks like your open door buzzer

The horn works fine so I doubt it's this, however the car doesn't make noise when the doors are open, I will take the piece appart to see if there is a buzzer inside. Any idea where this should be plugged ?

I took the piece appart and it is definatly the thingy that buzz when the doors are open, now I just need to find out where it gets plugged in.

someone probably purposely took it out because that beeping noise is so annoying. I mean, do we really need a consistent beeping noise to tell us that our door is open.

No but sometimes it's nice to have one that tells you your lights are on...

the first thing i did when i bought my explorer was grab underneath the dashboard and pull the plug on that thing
Still thinking about building i a relais that cuts the power to the lights when the ignition is off
No reason to have lights on while u not driving i think
My wife tends to leave the lights on after parking the car in the garage , last tuesday the battery was empty again :(

I think I may need the buzzer to work to be able to pass the french safety, althought I have found deep deep underneath the dashboard the plug for the buzzer so it should be ok.

The connector should be directly under the center of the dash.....

When you connect that, it will tell you if:

You left your keys in the ignition.
Or
You left your headlights on.

Go get one of those auto dimming mirrors. It not only dims for lights behind you, it turns the lights on and off. Beast mod I ever did. Cost me about 25 bucks total.
