What is this thing

right behind the cat on my 91 xplorer is another canister which looks like a another cat. Now i've heard that this is a resonator if it is do i need or can i take it off when i redo my exhaust?

it's the resonator, if you have a cat-back done at a shop they'll take it off. Or if you do it yourself just take it off anyway

what about a cat-back system when you buy one from flowmaster do they have you take it off of is something that you just do anyway

Some kits come with another resonator, some come without. The stock one gets taken off.
