I'm from florida and I have a 92 explorer sport with 147,000 miles on it. I only drive through the city. I was wondering what maintenance I should do, ie. engine rebuild. I have also heard the the transmissions in the 91-92 had problems. Any recomendations on a new transmission. Also any recomendations on to what performance parts I should add so I can smoke some hondas, if thats possible.

Do a search for regular maintenance on the site. There are alot of sggestions. I suggest changing oil, plugs, wires, wires, and fluids and filters. Also, I suggest getting your fuel injectors cleaned and running some intake cleaner through it.

If the tranny works, leave it be, however if you "smoke honds" alot, then it will fail you quickly.

If you're looking at a complete engine rebuild, take a look at www.vanirtech.com . They sell performance engine components.

As for the tranny, there isn't much you can do with the A4LD. I just got mine rebuilt (4R55E, a derivative of the A4LD) and an valve body update, new planets, machined clutch packs, and a shift kit were all installed. However, the A4LD is an inherently weak tranny.

I suggest you poke your head around these forums and the main site. You'll get some ideas for performance bolt-ons and other mods. Also, don't be afraid to use the search!

it's not a 4x4. It's a 2 door sport. The trans has always been kinda rough shifting through the gears. Wondering if there is any mod that will shorten the shift distance. Like a short throw shifter. When I'm cruising at a steady speed and I let off the gas, the explorer jerks a little bit, same thing happens when I press the gas. I already changed the clutch and slave cylinder.

Ok have you checked your u-joints? Slip yoke?

Also, it could be caused by simply having loose bolts in the rearend.

I'll have my dad help me check that out after my finals for school are over. I think I just need to quit putting money into my 92 and get a v8 explorer or an SOHC v6 explorer. B/C the one I have now is never gonna be fast.
