What mufflers do you guys have/reccomend?

I wanna get a muffler for my truck(97 sprt 4.0) and I don't know which one to go with. I would like sonething on the cheap side but I want a good sound. A nice deep truck sound not a ricer import car sound. Also I am confused about what mufflers would fit? Could pretty much everything be welded in? What is the stock pipe size?

And let me add to it. Has anyone heard of the Purple Hornie muffler? I know sounds funny
How is it? It is a glasspack muffler. Any info on that?
Also considering I am Keeping money in mind would you guys just have the muffler welded in, buy and muffler and have custom piping done or buy a whole exhaust?

I have a Magnaflow muffler on my OHV with a "custom" 2.25" pipe and love it. Performance and sound are both very good. I just went to my local muffler shop and told them I wanted a little performance and a little more sound but not too annoying, and they hooked me up for $200. Many members have the same experience.

With your SOHC however, you need to find a dual in, single out muffler, which seems harder to find. A single 2.25 or 2.5 out seems to be the best for keeping necessary backpressure and also noise down. I would not get a glasspack muffler, noise and performance will both suck.

Go to your local mom and pop muffler place and tell them what you want. You'll probably end up with a Flowmaster, Magnaflow, or Dynamax muffler and a "custom" bent tailpipe. Good luck!

i have heard that the flowmaster for your application resonates badly. Someone said to go with the magnaflow. I would ask around and try to hear a truck or at least talk to someone here who has done what will do.

hey, to tell ya the truth the fact I have two pipes coming in never crossed my mind. Ok, so no glasspack, Alec, how doe sthe magnaflow sound? load? I don't want anything groundshaking but I want something you can hear. Was the $200 you paid including the muffler?

Not necessarily… I have a SOHC with a custom cat back with 2.5” pipes using a single in single out muffler. The exhaust shop simply made a custom Y pipe for the hook up. $200 for the whole system.

Its a Flowmaster, I don't remember what model.

The sound is great except about 65 MPH, it is way too loud for me; to fix just go faster or slower than 65.

I bought the muffler and the tip and paid $150 and installation was $75. I couldn't spend $300+ for the whole cat back where the only differences in setups is that with the Borla one you get a stainless pipe from the muffler to the tip.

the "advantage" to a full catback system is that they are typically engineered to not have any resonance at any speed, this is nice b/c it would stink to find the speed at which you resonate to be at highway cruising, you can get some of the cheaper cat-backs for about 250 if you look around.

thanks for all the info guys, my first step is to find a good shop around here to do it, not too familiar with the area since I just moved for college, hopefully I can find time in the next couple days to call a few places about the install, my girlfriend is getting me the muffler thanks again, you guys have been a big help

I received and installed the Gibson Cat-back system on my 4.0 SOHC which I got thru Performance Products and it sound great!

Its got a low rumble in idle and at the same time its not loud when you romp it.

I live in P.R. and the Cat-back system cost me $320.00 including shipping and handling. I installed the system myself and it took me just about 3 hours, taking it real easy and having a few brews.

I think I am gonna go with a 40 or 50 seriers flowmaster, dual in, single out, and have a custom pipe to the back, 2.5-3 inches, a guy here said 125 for the install and custom piping

Flowmaster 50 series with 2.5" exhaust works fine for me and sounds great - good choice IMHO.:redexp:

40 very loud..... maybe even to loud... good if you like loud and never hual people around

40 delta.....noise level same as 50

50......good--loud & agressive but not obnoxious like my 40 nondelta can be at times

50 series is your best bet - mellow tone aggressive rumble through the lower range (up to ~35-40 mph), then a nice smooth tone at road and highway speeds. Definitely a head turner!:redexp:
