what number octane gas to use in 02 explorer XLS

Hello everyone.Just bought a used 02 Explorer XLS,love the truck and would like to know which number octane gas is recommended to use.Is premium really necessary?I have been using 89 which is plus i think.Thanks

87 is all you need unless your truck is running custom programs that take advantage of the different octane levels (I have custom tunes for both 89 and 91).

All you're doing is lightening your wallet by using 89.
