what weight oil is considered best to use in a 2000 ford explorer EB with 177260 miles ? right now I am using 10w-40 Mobil 1. She is a V8.

I have a '96 V8 AWD Eddie Bauer, and I have run 5W-30 in her since I have owner her, started with Semi-synthetic, and moved to Valvoline Full Synthetic, now I run Amsoil OE, with a quart of Lucas full Synthetic oil stabilizer, so the oil is slightly thinker then 5W-30, but I also have just about 191,000 miles on mine. 5w-30 should od just fine for your truck though.

I use Mobil-1 5w-30 High Mileage in my '98 SOHC 4x. 201,000k miles and still running fine.

If it calls for 5w-30, use 5w-30. If you're worried about it breaking down, use a synthetic or HDEO like Rotella.

It also depends on your engine. If you've got the SOHC and you live in a hot area and the engine burns oil... 10w40 is probably fine. The OHV is very picky and prone to lack of lubrication/contamination. Using a thicker oil with the OHV further starves the top end while the engine warms up. I still wouldn't do it with the SOHC but it's better designed for oil flow to the top end.

If you want to treat your engine and do what you can without breaking the bank, a high mileage synthetic would be good. I tend to lean towards Valvoline but will go with Pennzoil next go around.

That one is good.
I am using 15W-50 on a similar mileage V8, because of worn engine and low pressure at idle.
Mine is one of the last two years that Ford changed the recommendation to 5W-20. That's what previous owner used until it started to make noises and the oil pressure needle to jump all over at idle (warm engine). To avoid a rebuild, I am running 40 (with Lucas) and now 50 since I bought it almost 100k miles ago.
Don't go extended intervals, no matter what eco people want you to believe, keep it at 5K intervals even with Mobil 1.

PS: I found out that for me Rotella T6 5W-40 is not that great, in time it "wears" out the additives, maybe is too wide of a range for a "fake" synthetic, definitely not lasting like Mobil 1.

I always run full synthetic Mobil 1 5w30, 150k miles.

THIS!!! but even with a 5k oil change interval, use a good filter, The Motorcraft ones are really good actually, and are cheap. Also don't forget to CHECK YOUR OIL!!! Atleast every other fuel fill up. I work at a GM dealer, and we have cars come in all the time for and oil change at 5-7K and they are atleast 1-4 quarts low on oil, this is no joke.

5W-30, whatever dino-oil is on sale, 5K Intervals, 292K miles so far.

I use 5w-30 winter, 10w-30 summer

mobile one synthetic

thanks everybody !!!

Mobil 1 5W-30 High Mileage Full Synthetic Motor Oil, is my new oil !!

Why switch? Ideally you want like 0w30 so that oil flows really easy when it's cold. And by "cold" I mean "ambient".

^^ This. 0w-30 might be too thin and creep past valve stem seals (and others) more easily in older vehicles. If you can get away with it, use it. If not, 5w-30 is best if your vehicle calls for xw-30.
