Asking specifically about the '04 Explorer but I suppose good ideas can come from other vehicles & years...
Does everyone mount their brake controller near their right knee? How about that wasted space just in front of the floor console cubby? Anything behind that blank spot that would prevent cutting a hole and mounting the controller there? Since this truck doesn't have an open cubby under the heat controls like my previous tow vehicle, I'm looking for ideas.

I made a bracket and mounted ours under the dash. Here are 2 pictures

Above right knee but I used automotive dash Velcro. Mounted at a slight slant but it works fine (Prodigy).

Yeah it does look like above the right leg is the only possible place to mount one. :thumbdwn:

To make matters worse nearly all controllers have a curved top and/or controls on top. What are these ppl thinking? I bought a Hayes G2 because it's flat and has the controls on the front (and manual lever on the bottom). I'll skip the bracket and mounting sleeve and just velcro it to the bolster.

Make sure you use that special auto dash Velcro. The others won't stay long.

I've always had my brake controllers on the left side:
-1997 Chrysler Town & Country minivan (2003-2007)
-2000 Chrysler Grand Voyager minivan (2007-2009)
-2006 Mercury Mountaineer (2009-present)
.....same Tekonsha Prodigy on all 3!!

I tap it now and then getting into the Mounty, especially if my wife drove it last. That's just where I've always had them, and feel comfortable with it. I don't think the 2006+ trucks have enough room by the right knee due to the center console (not present in 3rd gen trucks).
