I have a 91 EX, the engine is toast, with 233+k miles. I want to drive it some more. What wrecks would be a bolt in 4.0. Changing intake etc. is'nt bad but I hear there are crank, cam sensor differances in push rod 4.0's. I have access to some wrecks and have time till it warms up. Thanx in advance and Happy Holidays to all.

4.0 Rangers, Aerostars there are a few others. You can do a search, ther was a recent thread that has all the bolt in applicatons.

hi i put a 99 4.0 in my 91, i changed the plenum and exhuast manifolds to elimanate the egr, also had to change the crank sensor.pretty much straight forward swap.

Before you put a motor in it, are you sure the trans is OK? The auto trans in the 91-94 is a weak point. Just a thought....

Yes, big weak point. I've still got a complete 93 4x4 chassis(112K) to part out or discard. Good luck,

Yeah, I'm curious also, what makes you think the motor is toast? cracked heads/block?

223k miles is a lot, but for 4.0, especially one that has been well taken care of, is known to go many more miles.

But I’m with who ever said swap to the 95+ newer motor. It will be easier to find, will have a couple extra ponies over your 91, will have an updated version of whatever transmission you use, and will be EEC-V/OBD-II which is a definite advantage if you ever plan on upgrading to bigger cams and what not.

Be careful with the Aerostar 4.0 OHV's...if you use one of those you may want to use your Explorer intake manifold--and I know for a fact that the Aerostar intake tube won't fit for you (at least I couldn't get it to work with mine) , but that's not a big deal, you can re-use your Explorer one unless it's cracking out.

And good advice all around here, the question raised about the condition of your transmission as it relates to your engine options is a good one. If your transmission is slipping, etc. it may be worth your time to consider a 95+ 4.0 with it's electronic transmission, or even a 5.0 swap.

near bolt in replacement eng

Thanks for all the info. My trans was redone about 2 years ago and seems tight. Existing eng has cracked heads. I have a lead on another 91 with 125K that nosed into something. No eng damage. I'll know in a couple of weeks. Thanks again and I'll keep you all posted.

Spares

I am having a 96 4.0 OHV put in my 94 Limited as we speak. It has 110K but it was all I could find in a pinch and the guy is guranteeing the engine and his work. I have known him for a long time and he is a good guy.

Speaking of spares, I really need a temperature sensor for the overhead temperature/Compass gauge....the sensor is located between the grill and the radiator ont he drivers side and just plugs into two wires.......can you help me...I have been searching for one fo these and come up short every time......the dealer tells me that these are no longer avaliable.

Thanks
Dwight P

Best of luck with your engine changeout. PS somewhere online is a step by step instructions from "Ford" you can down load it and print it out.
