Explorer 1992
I just bought a 1992 Explorer. I has a few rust spots, which let's me know it needs a paint job. I want to get it painted black, but I have heard of lot of quams about getting Trucks painted. If it isn't a good paint job it will look awful. I want to lower the from and add a front bumper, a brush grille guard and side steps, what should I do?

Wait

I bought my 88 mustang and it had huge areas of primer showing through. I had it painted less than 3 weeks after I bought it.

Abouth 2 months later I found a mustang site and started wanting to add things like a spoiler or ground effects. The only thing that stopped me was the added cost of having to have more parts painted. Had I waited on the paint job, I could have saved a lot of money on having other parts painted.

So I suggest you wait and drive it how it is. Read what others think about the same mods that you are planning on. Get an idea of what your final goal with the vehicle is and then make sure that your mods work towards your final goal. Then work toward that goal.

In the mean time, I would ask around in the "Car Nut" or "hotrodding" crowd and see what shops come highly recommended. If you find a shop that guarantees your satisfaction, it is worth the little extra $$$ to make sure you are happy. Shops like that will do it right the first time so they don't have to do right the second time.

Yeah I would wait till you decide that this is what you want. Some people buy something just cause others have it and do modifications and then sell it because it is not what they expected. Wait till you feel the X urge and then look at other members rides and then modify if that is what you feel. Regardless of a paint job, the paint job is only as good as the one spraying the gun. Take careful notice of ones reputation. If you can only afford a 300.00 paint job, then that is what you are going to get. It all depends on what you can afford.

You do not want to lower the front and get the brush guard. Those two do not go together as I later found out myself. If you like the musculine brushguard look then stay at stock height or lift it a bit. That would look really nice.

If you want the lower/street look, then stay away from bars (brush guards, step bars, rear guards, etc.). You could even get front spoiler/air dam to make your front look lower than it actually is.
