Ok my X is starting to die and the tranny thing is making me mad!!! I want something i can make quick but on a budget. My mom has a 2000 sohc w/3:73's and i love it. The only reason i dont think i want one of those is the transmission problems. That inturn takes me to the 5.0's. How does the AWD transfer case hold up offroad? Any problems with any part of the V8 driveline? What is the best year for a V8 explorer between 96-99? I know some of you guys can give me some input

The 5.0 drivetrain is very good. It's fine for light to light-moderate wheeling and is nice on the street.

Look for a 96 or 97 as they can be easier to mod due to the fuel system.
