...in buying a used Explorer? I'm considering the '91-'94 4-door 4x4 model. I want an automatic, even though I know that the A4LD is a POS. I've made a few posts here doing some "research," but I just wanted some input. Any other problem areas? This would be my daily driver and occasional tow vehicle. Thanks.

Problem areas besides the tranny.... Hmmmm lets see:

1) Automatic Locking Hubs - They're crap and can't take much abuse. Look for or convert (is fairly cheap and easy to do) to manuals.

2) T/F case shift motor - If not used regularly, will get gummed up, especially trying to get into low. Good cleaning will usually do the trick.

3) Radius Arm Bushings - Heat from Cats ruin them and you get lots of nice clunking noises.

4) Rust - nuff said

5) Fuel Pressure Regulator - Tends to crap out with age. Can cause lots of codes, none of which directly leads back to it....

6) Center Console Armrest - Love to break with any weight applied to them.

If you haven't yet, read thru the Singleton Maintenance Site. It has most of the common problems AND FIXES for the first Generation Ex's.
