Well I've had it with the factory stereo , the light is burned out and the speakers are not the best.

I took my back panel off on the 2000 sport and found a huge hole big enough for 10" speakers.

What are you guys using in that space that gets a good sound.

Essentially I would like 2-way 6x9 in the front door and a couple of 8-10" in the back. Is this a good setup for an older guy. I would be getting a mid range deck and small amp. I can't handle a box since I use the back a lot so whatever I get has to be buried behind the panels.

For best sound you want to use round speakers. I know 5-1/4" will fit using or making an adapter plate. I think you can fit 6-1/2" as well.

If you want really good sound, and to make it real easy to install, I'd suggest getting replacement 6 x 8 speakers. Pioneer makes some really good ones, and you can get 5 x 7's that will fit from the audio companies that don't offer 6 x 8's. Throw these in the 4 stock locations, and get the factory subwoofer (which goes behind the right rear panel) from someone whos selling the one for a 2000, throw a better 8" sub in it, wire up an aftermarket amp for the sub, and you have a really good but pretty simple system.

You could cut the rear speaker mounts and throw 8" subs in there, but the stock location in back is a better and easier choice. You can get adapters to let you fit 6 x 9's in the 6 x 8 locations if you want to use those.

If you want a better system, you can get adapters to fit 6.5's in the stock speaker locations, put seperate tweeters higher in the door, and get a custom sub enclosure (that still fits behind the panel and doesn't take up cargo space) that will let you fit a 10" sub.

Thanks for that bit of info.. There seems to be a harness in the back on the right side and I think it is for a speaker and amp.

In the doors I will put better 5x8's

In the back seats I will put 6x9's or 8" round speakers.

I'm a little out of touch with stereos. what is this called in terms of a setup ? is it a 5 way ? In the end I will have 5 speakers total.

I still don't know how to set this up. My desk should have 2 RCA coming out of it and the AMP should have 2 RCA in and 4 speakers outs,, where does the 5th big speaker go ?

If you want to amp four speakers your HU (deck) needs to have 2 pairs of RCA pre-outs & the amp 2 pairs of RCA in. The amp will have 4+ & 4- hook ups for the speakers.

To power a sub the 4 chanel amp you are powering your speakers with needs to have a set of pre-outs to run to another amp that will powering your sub.

Look here www.crutchfield.com for help as well. They have tutorials you can view on their website that will help as well.

Most aftermarket decks have 40-50W max per channel, which is good enough to power the 6x8's. I'd suggest browsing for what 6x8's you like, pick up two pairs for a total of 4, drop them in the stock locations once you wire up the aftermarket deck you choose, and see what you think. I strongly advise against messing around and putting in anything other than 6x8 stock size speakers (or maybe 6x9's with adapters) if you're out of touch with stereos, as you might mess up your ride and cause yourself greater repair expense.

If you want to use a seperate amp to power the speakers, you'll need a deck that has at least two pairs of RCA pre-outs, a pair for the front and a pair for the rear. If you plan on adding the sub too, you'll want a pre-out for that, unless you get a 5-channel amp or something. Keep in mind you don't HAVE to use an amp for the speakers if you just want a mild budget setup. It's fine to power the speakers with the head unit and just use an amp to power to subwoofer. If you don't really want ear-blowing volume levels or thumping bass, you might be happy with just the 4 speakers powered by the head unit. If you're not happy with it, simply add the subwoofer.

The "5th big speaker" or subwoofer, goes in the back where the harness is. There is a factory subwoofer, that consists of a black plastic enclosure with the subwoofer speaker in it, and it puts out the lower end frequencies that the smaller speakers don't reproduce so well. Adding this to the system gives it more kick. Check out some of the pics in subwoofer threads and see where the factory subwoofer goes to get an idea of what it looks like.

You might get 40 total watts out of any aftermarket deck on a good day. The is no need to run two rca cables unless you run a sub. You can just put a couple y adapters at the amp. The deck doesnt put out the same signal on the front and rear rca outputs. The rear rca output frequencies are usually lower as for the bigger speakers or rear fill.

wow that is a lot to consider. I will try the better speakers first and take it one step at a time.. so what do you guys recommend to replace the factory speakers.

I replaced mine with the Pioneer 2-way 6x8's:

http://www.pioneerelectronics.com/pna/v3/pg/product/details/0,,2076_310069908_291227134,00.html

These are nice for powering off a head unit (or lower power amp), and are decent speakers for the price. Much better than factory. You can get these at audio shops and electronics stores like Circuit City. They run about $50-60/pair but if you hold out, you can sometimes get them on sale.

If you are running the speakers off a higher power amplifier, you'll need speakers that can handle more power. The Pioneer 3-way 6x8's fit the bill:

http://www.pioneerelectronics.com/pna/v3/pg/product/details/0,,2076_310069904_291202530,00.html

The nice part about these speakers is, you can get them at wallyworld for $60/pair. They're fine to use for powering off a head unit too, if you can't find a better deal on 2-way speakers.

These are just some easy suggestions, many other companies like Kenwood, MTX, Polk, Rockford, etc. etc. make speakers that will fit. Pioneer is a pretty big brand and their stuff is usually easy to find. Quite a few forum members have replaced their factory speakers with Pioneers and they seem to do well.

I have 6x8 speakers in my Sport since I replaced the stock speakers when I had my new headunit installed
