Okay I just received my new to you key less remote off of e-bay and we to program it using the instructions listed below, and I can't get into the programming mode. I have tried fast turns and slow turns, I even did a little research and tried the old 5 turns from the pre 2000 explorers instead of the 8 and still nothing. I followed the manual locked the doors electronically and cycled 8 times between the #1 and the #3 position. That's were my fun starts, there is no automatic lock / unlock. I have a remote that came with the explorer and verified that the numbers on the back match and that I have two working batteries. I have searched and all the instructions that I have found are the same. Again I ask the question, What the Heck am I missing????:banghead:

You may end up going to Ford to have it programmed. I had a similar issue with my Durango when I tried to access the self-programming mode to add another remote to it. Ended up taking it to Dodge, and they charged me about 30 bucks to do it.

Were all the doors closed when you tried? The instructions from the e-bay seller worked like a champ for me. There may be a stopper if you have 4 remotes already programmed, since it will only hold 4 remotes and 4 transponder keys.

I just did one on my 2005 a couple of weeks ago, actually I used one of the old remotes from my Expedition(FYI one remote can work two different vehicles). It don't think matters if the door is open as I did it on a 2002 explorer, 98 expedition, and 2005 expedition with the door open as far as I can remember. Trying adding an extra turn of the key. I think I was counting wrong when I did the 2005 and so I added an extra turn and then it worked.

Pinshooter may be right on the 4 remotes. Did you buy the car new? If not the old owners may have had 4 remotes on it. At any rate I would try the extra turn before going to the dealer.

I thought it was position 2-3 8 times. I've used that method on both my truck and an '02 Sable with no problems.

And the 4 remotes doesn't matter. They will clear when you enter that mode. You need to have all the remotes you want to be programed there.

I had a similar problem... Try starting in the accessory possition and go to off the back to accessory 8 times. I dont know why but that worked for me...
