If you're smelling coolant inside, you probably have a leak from the heater coil or connections to it. It's like a little radiator inside the heater box (below/behind dash). The smell probably gets worse if you have your heater on. You might check for coolant dripping down from the box, check the top-edge of your carpeting (under the dash area) for dampness, or under the carpeting for a damp pad.

Hope this helps!

IF you're smelling coolant inside, that's probably exactly what's going on. My '91 just had that problem, we took it to Ford, and first they said it was an AC cycling switch, but that didn't fix it, so we took it back and found out it was a small leak in the heater core. They replaced it. It was about $190 for Ford to fix it. When mine went out, you could move the slider for temp. to heat fast and smoke (coolant) would puff out and smell horrible.

Hope that helps.

smells worse under the hood

it smells worse under the hood by the over flow tank but it is the black box next to it the box has two vaccum lines coming off of it what is this thing that is where most of the smell is coming from

The Black box with the domes on it next to the overflow is the EVAP can , it traps the fuel vapors and stores them for the engine to burn- should have a hose that runs to the throttle body. If the smell is a fuel smell make sure all of the connections are on and the hoses are in good shape. No coolant in it, but check around it if your smelling coolant , could be radiator leak in that area or something.

Check all of your cooling hoses, overflow line etc. But if your smelling it inside the cab of the vehicle the posts above hit it on the head. Heater core.

Hope that helps some.
