What the hell are these clips ?

I was removing the harness to get to the anti theft transceiver in my steering column in my 2004 Explorer and these 2 clips fell from the assembly , I have no idea where the go. These kinds of thing can be a nightmare

Without seeing what your talking about I'm guessing you're referring to the little brass pieces that control the chime circuit when the key is in the ignition and you open a door.

Well that is strange, I didn't remove the key cylinder. I can find any info on these, I guess it's bye bye chime

I don't believe they go in the key cylinder, but near it. Maybe it opens/closes the contacts depending on the position of the key cylinder. I'm not sure exactly how it works.
 






Having just opened up my steering column what I can tell you is that our steering columns (this is the explorer sport trac section) do not have the same parts. My ignition and gear shift do not look like yours. You might get more help in the explorer section.

My guess is that they insert into the top or bottom plastic steering column cover and help the two covers snap together.

It is just a guess, though.

OOOPs you're correct , wrong forum, but thanks, that sounds like it could be corrects
 






Did you open it up to place a key in there so that you can start it without a pass key? I thought about that. I played with the key placement and just did not think it would be 100% reliable.

So instead I found to lock smiths fairly close. Drove to 1 and asked for a new programmed key. the guy quoted me the price and I said, "wo, hey, you said $50 on the phone". When he said no he didn't I have the name of the other lock smith down the road and apologized. He next said he would do it for $49.
 






PS: I don't actually remember the price the other lock smith actually quoted me, but it was less than the $75 the guy tried to charge me, so I just threw $50 out there.
 












I don't think those metal pieces have anything to do with the plastic steering column cover. They wouldn't be made of brass if they were. They definitely look like electrical contacts to me. I've encountered similar pieces while working on GM steering columns. I didn't care about the key chime at the time, so I just tossed them.

I'm pretty sure they are not ignition related. The actual ignition switch is located near the bottom of the steering column and it's connected to the key lock with a rod. There's also a black plastic ring around the key lock (a transceiver). That's what reads the transponder key and sends the info to the PCM allowing the engine to start by turning on the fuel injectors.
 






Thanks for the reply I got my transceiver ring today put it in but it didn't work so now I'm getting towed to the mechanic I have to give in to failure
