1997 Explorer xlt 4x4
I have a 1997 Ford Explorer, 4.0 sohc, 3.73 posi differential, 4x4. automatic.

It has 150k miles on it, and when the engine or trans goes, I do not want to spend any new money on an old car.
So I am thinking when the trans or engine dies, I will pull the whole rear end and keep it for a project vehicle in the future. Maybe also pull the front diff. and then haul the rest of the car to the scrap yard.
What are you guys doing to your older Explorers when a major item like a trans or engine fails?
The differential is a posi and has 31 spline axles, and disc brakes.

This is a site for Explorer enthusiasts, so most of us just repair them.

 yea. Lol if its in decent shape sell it to someone who will fix it :D

When this one gives up the ghost, we plan on buying a new one. We love our Explorer. Why not use the money we would spend fixing this one, on buying a new one?

My transmission failed @ 197k. Guess what I did? I rebuilt it and put it back in. Ready for another 40-70k.

^ Right on, green! My torque converter failed @ 174000, overhauled that transmission, that almost 40,000 miles ago.
