- 2003 Explorer Sport
I have a 98 explorer sport. Has the 4.0 with the front and rear timing chain. My son got hit in the passenger side. Insurance is totaling it but the payout is good. I can either buy it back and get it fixed or buy another one and let the insurance take the one I have. Question is when did ford improve the timing chain noise and break issues? I have a 98, had timing chain noise and that setup is just weird. Pulling the engine to put on a new chain?? Are the 2001 or 2002's 4.0 a better engine for the timing chain and as a whole? Looking at the forums I would say yes but thought I would ask for opnions again. My 98 had 110,000 miles. It appears I can get a 01 or 02 with 70 to 80 K miles for around 4 K.
