I picked up 95 explorer xlt 4x4 with 139,000 miles on it today for $400! cuz it has a bad transmission. My question is what tranny do i have and what am i looking at price wise for a used one?

only gear it really has that doesnt slip badly is reverse and it takes like 1 whole minute for it to go into gear in the first place.

im gunna tear into it before i replace it, the lady said it just went out one day?

had time to mess with truck today and if you put it in gear and rev it up to around 3000rpm it shudders and starts to move, and if you give it a LOT of gas it feels like it slams into gear really hard then it just back to inchin along. Reverse engages solidly then feels just like forward gears (inches along) what do you think? where shall I start?

p.s. the od light is flashing at me also

Connect a 0-300 PSI test gauge to the rear test port to take pressure readings in all of the gear settings. Could you update your vehicle information since it says 1993 with a manual since you have a 1995 with an automatic?

I actually have both the 95 is going to my daily driver when i get it up and running. are there specs for the different gear psi and where do i find them? I can rebuild an engine with my eyes closed but never learned much about auto trannys!

Update

pulled the pan today and found out tranny had never been serviced before and it smelled like it had actually been on fire thats how burnt it smells! so im pulling the trans and rebuilt unit from a good tranny shop i use.

Im going to get all the stuff and rebuild the old one myself as a learning experience.

It is not a good idea to rebuild a fried or over heated auto trans. You must replace everything and so would cost to much. I throw them into the metal scrap bin.
