You have a 4R70W

It's a 4-speed wide ratio electronically controlled AOD.

are you sure, I have a 4R55E in my 2000 v8. I was thinking that 4R70Ws were only in F-150s

I'm almost absolutely sure you do not. The 5R55E is the tranny used in the 2000 V6 explorer.

And yes the 4R70W is also used in the F-150/Expedition.

Nope, you have the 4R70W if you have the 302 Explorer/Mountaineer, and the 4R70W isn't in just the F-150. The 4R70W is also used in the Mustangs, and I don't remember Roush doing anything if much at all on those transmissions until Stage 3, if they do anything. So in other words, it's a pretty stout transmission. Now, you buddies with the SOHC with the 5R55E transmission might beat you in a drag race, but you will be able to pull a trailer with their Explorer on it when it goes out from pulling loads that were too heavy.

Phone your dealers parts dept. Give them your serial number...... It don't get much easier....

Not unless Ford seriously screwed up. The 4R55E was only installed on the 4.0L OHV Explorers, never the V8. The 5R55E transmission is a modified 4R55E and was first used on the SOHC. It soon made its way over to the 4.0L OHV as well. The last year Explorer to get the 4R55E was in '96.
