Okay guys. heres the deal i have a 92 explorer 4WD, 6" lift on 33s with a dana 30 sas. i have eaten through atleast Five A4LD trannys. ive seriously lost track. they are absolute trash and im sick of it. i daily drive this truck and occasionally it gets thrashed on in the mud and in the woods and snow. i need to know what transmission i can put in this truck that will stop giving me issues all the time. i still want to keep it an automatic so a standard is out of the question. just let me know if i have any options other than just replacing garbage with some more garbage. thanks!

get an adapter setup and put in a 700r4 or a small block ford transmission.

Though.... those won't last much longer if you are eating up a4lds that quickly..... they aren't as weak a transmission as people keep complaining about.....

I mean honestly, how many people have to do rebuilds very far before 100k miles..... you really have to abuse it to make it last less than that..... There are beefier and more durable transmissions, but it isn't like this one is made of glass. Are these transmissions you are putting in used or good remanufactured transmissions?

Discovery 3

The Land Rover Discovery 3 (LR3 in North America) came with the Cologne V6 (SOHC) and 6 speed automatic transmission as an option. I don't know much about the transmission but the vehicle was supposed to be rugged enough for frequent off road use. You might look into it.

ive just been doing used transmissions over and over

Well there is your problem. Go get a good rebuilt transmission and you won't have any more trouble. You will have as much or more money into adapting something else to work as you would getting a rebuilt or even a built transmission.

do you know of any places online that sells rebuilt ones?

We went with a 700r4 on our X. That was after 3 a4ld transmissions. It wasn't any cheaper converting to the 700r4. However, when the 700r4 gets its rebuild, even with all the upgrades it will still be a much cheaper rebuild than the a4ld.

We were getting < 100k miles from the a4ld's. IIRC, we got about 75k miles from each rebuild. They were rebuilt from two different places and both places "supposedly" did the upgrades.

We have about 95k miles or so on the 700r4 and we recently lost engine breaking. After this wheeling season I'll pull the trans and have it fixed.

I'm often asked if we would do the 700r4 again with all we know now. My answer is I just don't know. There is no way we would have put in another a4ld. The other option we would consider is the normal manual transmission with and hand throttle and at least an atlas II.
