I think I need a new trans. I have a 1997 4.0 SOHC xl. I think i need a 4R55E, but not completely positive. Also would a 5R55E fit?
Also any recomended shops in Richmond VA?

Thanks for the help,
Peter

97 should have a 5R55E, but you never know with Ford. I have to get an air filter for a V8 even though I have a V6. Early 5R55E transmissions have a gear sensor just behind the bellhousing that larer ones don't have. I have heard you can just twist the sensor wires together and use the later transmission.

Thanks Opera, I was thinking that for the 5R the 5 stood for a 5 gear.

All 1997 Explorers with automatics use the 5r55e tranny.
