I've got a 97 V8 AWD Explorer and the trans seems to have gone out. It slips really bad in first but when you get going it seems ok. Atleast it was last time we drove it.

It was trailered to the dealer and I think all they did was pull the pan and say the fluid was burnt and there was some metal in the pan. Somehow the dealer says that = an entirly new transmission to the tune of $2200 for the trans and labor.

Exactly what type of trans is in this thing anyway?

Thanks for the help.

Dave

It should be a 4R70W. It's basically an AODE with wide raito gearing for better pulling and accelleration. Did you not ever change the fluid? So far 66K miles on my '97 Mountaineer without a manufacturer-related problem, and that includes trailering, hauling, some light-duty off-road trails everyday driving & drag racing. I did have have problems with seals leaking at around 60k, which was related to incompetence of the mechanics at Starkville Ford, but the dealership has since settled over this matter. It's was pretty bad that seals and pans were leaking once every two weeks leaving puddles of transmission fluid on my driveway, and it didn't start happening until I picked it up from the dealership when they were supposed to be through with my 60K maintainance job.
