Just picked up a 2008 XLT with the V8. My question is what wheels are driving the vehicle when you do not have any of the 4 x 4 modes selected?

On Explorers it's the rear. (On Escapes the front)
 






rear until it slips, then the fronts kick in, then back to rear. unless you have it in 4 hi or 4 lo
