Whats everyone think? 2004 Audi A8L

we have an A4 here and my only audi complaint so far is the cupholder. i don't know if the a8 is the same, but i looks like it could be from the pic. the main cupholder is in the armrest. you open it up and leave it open to have the cups in. this is fine and all.. but if you have a drive thru type styrofoam cup with a straw in it... don't EVER accidentally knock the armrest lid. it will punch the straw right through the bottom of the foam cup. yes i know this from experience. luckily.. the armrest was like a pool and didn't leak. this has happened more than once but luckily only once with the foam cup.
otherwise.. the audi's drive really nice yet feel sporty at the same time.

I've always been an S500 fan I think its a great looking automobile, and they've fixed the quality issues for this year, but whenever I see the sticker I always feel like I'm being hosed. You're talking about a $90,000 car who'se competition tops at around 75-77 and I dont see anything about the car, other than the star on the hood to justify the increase.

Yes, my father is looking for a new car, so we just drove a bunch of cars. I'm going back to Florida again in a week, so we may drive a few more (and a few repeats).

The S class has always been one of my favorites. We had an Audi way back in the mid 80's, when the build quality was probably the worst in the world (dealer politeness too). That ruined it for my dad and he refuses to ever buy an Audi. I had to drag him to the dealer to even test drive it (and I ended up doing all the driving as he still didn't want to  ). Ever since that faulty Audi, we've had Mercedes of one kind or another. The S class is (in my opinion) the best model of all three German marks. I like the new Audi's. The only reason we don't have one now is because the nearest dealer is 520 miles away...

Anyhow, the controls in the S is much simpler to use. It's still very complex, but not as cumbersome as the iDrive system. I think that these days any luxury car with the usual prerequisite gadgets is going to be complex by necessity. The Audi was also very nice to use. Similar to the iDrive, but much, much simpler.

As for the ride, all three are going to ride a bit rougher with the larger optional wheels. I always prefer to get the basic wheels and buy some nicer aftermarket wheels myself. You get a better wheel for the same price (or rather the same level wheel at a cheaper price if you prefer). The S rides great, but since I grew up driving Mercedes, I may be a bit biased. The BMW's always ride a bit stiffer, but the last BMW we had was a Z3, so it's a bad example to compare.

I think all three German sedans will ride a bit stiffer than the Lexus, as all German cars tend to do so from what I've seen. Lexus makes some really smooth cars.

Have you seen the new M45? It's design is very interesting. It looks very nice to me, and from my brief experience it is quite nice. Some may not like the new look, but I do. It's not as nice as the Q, but it's still a great car and it's only $45k. My wife is looking at something more sporty, so we're considering the G35 coupe. It's the 350Z's big brother, and it actually handles better despite weighing more.

If you don't mind paying the premium for the S, I say do it. You could always consider the S320 if you don't mind a few less hp. You could always get the new S600 with the twin turbo V12 (sick, absolutely sick, but I love it!).

My uncle just bought the new SL55 AMG, and that's a great car. I'll snap some pics of me in it when I'm in Florida, as well as my dad's new car (if he ever decides!!!).

Anyhow, no matter what, just go and drive each car thoroughly before buying. That's the best way. Audi has hte benefit of having Quattro. Mercedes is introducing AWD in the S class, but I think only the 600 has it right now.

Anyone who tells you money isn't a problem either actually doesn't have any, or is so full of **** they spend half their day looking at the soles of their shoes. You dont get money by wasting it. Money is always a problem ;)

Bjorn, they actually no longer make the S320 for sale here in the states. I'd have to do an S430, and it still starts at $74,000, where the rest of the cars top out fully loaded. Rediculous. Still a great car though.

I'm definately going to wait and see what they do with the Lexus LS for 04. I've been really happy with my Lexus, probably happier with it than I've been with a car since my old Datsun Z's.

As for the Infiniti, I like the style of some of the new cars, including the M45. I'm not yet convinced that they really have a product that competes with the top offerings from BMW, Lexus, Mercedes, Audi etc. yet though. I drove the Q45 back in 01, right when the current one came out, and to be honest I was really dissapointed. It felt heavy and slow, rode rough, uncomfortable seats. Just not at all what I had been expecting. As for the G35coupe though, talk about a gorgeous car. There aren't many on the road as good looking as it nowadays...

Section, We're vacuuming your room right now ;0

Well what do you know! You're right, the S320 is not sold here any more. I didn't even realize. I saw one at the dealer, but I guess it was a previous year model that never sold.

Anyhow, I still think you should go for the S600. Here is a little quote from the MB website:

Engine Intercooled twin-turbocharged 5,513-cc SOHC 36-valve 60° V-12. Two-piece high-pressure die-cast alloy cylinder block. Alloy heads and pistons. Die-cast magnesium cylinder head covers.

Net power 493 hp @ 5,000 rpm

Net torque 590 lb-ft @ 1,800 - 3,500 rpm

All that for the low price of $121,260. And there are really few options, as it already comes with almost everything! Of course the one option you definitely need is the active seats. When you corner, the car inflates bolsters on the inside to help hold you in place better. Is that cool or what! Oh, and the seats are ventilated and heated, along with the steering wheel.

Anyhow, just have fun driving each car. I think if you're looking for comfort, go with the Mercedes. If you're looking for sporty, the BMW is it. The Audi is a nic emix of both

Or I could get the comfort with the Lexus and pocket the $20,000 ;) It has goodies like the ventillated seats etc. I'm definately going to drive all the cars at legnth though. I'm not excited by the styling of the LS430, we'll see if its better this time around. As for the S600, I think it really is the best value, being that it does already have everything standard :p

Oh and Heath, there's plenty of room for you too lol

UPDATE:

I just read about two new Mercedes models that are coming out sometime inthe near future, the SL65 AMG and the S65 AMG. Both feature the 493 hp twin-turbo V12. However, AMG has applied its magic touch. The roadster and the sedan now have, get this, 604 horsepower and 738 lb-ft of torque.

Price is yet to be determined... I can only imagine. But they do put a smile on your face, don't they! :)

OUt of the cars listed, I like the A8 the best. For that price range and (my age), I'd much rather have a RS6 or E55 AMG. Both of them run 12 sec 1/4 miles! It would be awesome to surprise the hell outa all the unsuspecting Vette and Cobra owners...

I'll order mine now! ;)

Oh and also, I saw the pictures of the refreshed LS430. Its better but nothing groundbreaking. I'll have to see it in person.
