whats the back spacing on cobras?

It is very likely that the people with no rim rubbing aren't lowered.

chris nailed it- they wont rub in this area unless you are lowered. this is because lowering brings the lower control arm closer to the inside wheel lip.

Cobra R's

hey guys i have a 95 X and i would like to put some chrome cobra r rims any ideas where i can find some at a good price. Also what would be the best size 17s or 18s and what tire size would you guys recommend

thanks for your help

Do you want real ones or replicas? Do you want 17's or 18's? The rims size is totally up to your taste. I think 18's will not have RIM rub but will have TIRE rub.

is there a big difference in price and quality in the finish between an original wheel versus a replica? I like the size and wheel combo that chris and james have. what size are those? any idea where i can find the chrome relicas or originals. I have seen that xplorer xpress has them for over $300 per wheel chrome. Is the about right for the original cobra r thanks

Let's compare apples with apples. The $224.95 price by Gefracing.com is for the 17 X 9. The correct price for our chrome Cobra R replica wheel 17 X 9 $249.95 and 18 X 9 $349.95. as listed on our web site.

17x9 Cobra R replica: offset +24 backspacing 5 15/16
18x9 Cobra R replica: offset +24 backspacing 5 7/8

We found that the original 17 x 9 Cobra R wheels will bolt on to a lowered 2WD ok, but require spacers on 4WD/AWD. We found that the 17 x 9 replica wheels will bolt on to a lowered 4WD/AWD with no problem. We have tried the 18 x 9 on a lowered 2WD (no problem)but have not had a chance to try them on a 4WD/AWD.

By the way, is Gefracing.com a sponsor of this site? I would glady match the $224.95ea price for the 17 x 9 for anyone from this web site that is interested.

John, first of all let me appologize for misquoting your prices. I overlooked the fact that the price I quoted off your site was for an 18" wheel and the price I quoted off gefracing was for a 17" wheel.

Its interesting that the replicas dont rub. If the offset is the same as the real cobras and the rim width is the same, than isnt the backspacing the same? Maybe I dont completely understand how this stuff works?

No problem bud!

There is a slight difference and it is not noticable to the eye. I believe that the OEM Cobra R Wheels have an advirtised offset of + 25 and the replica is +24. It does not seem like much, but it is enough to make a difference. The other thing is this: the factory wheels are cataloged as fitting Mustangs and the replica wheels are described by the manufactures as fitting Explorers. I can not explain it any better, but it works. I am glad, because I do not like to recommend using spacers. By the way, the quality is good and they look exactly the same except for the the center cap.

Check out the pictures that Rick posted for me. Let me know if you have any questions.

John thanks for clarifying that for us guys that are not experts. It is good know that we have someone out their that KNOWS about Explorers from experience instead of heresay. I know that you and I have had conversations in regards to Explorer parts and you made me aware of alot of things the other guys may not have known, or they just wanted to make a sale. Thanks again for clearing that up. Sometimes it pays to pay a little bit more for something that you know has been tested by experts and that they stand behind it if it doesnt.
