Whats the difference between a 2wd 4.0 and a 4wd 4.0? Is it just oil pan and exhaust manifolds?
Thnx.

The 4x4 version has a balance shaft where the 2WD does not. It doesn't really make much difference. The engines are pretty much interchangeable.

Not sure of interchange years. Will a 96 bolt in my 97?

As far as I know 1997 was the first year for the SOHC V6.

The SOHC engine remained the same from '97 through at least '10 so it should bolt in, however you will want to swap over many of the peripheral parts from your old engine to the newer one or you will run into compatibility issues with wiring, connectors and lines.

I wouldn't install a used SOHC engine w/out first replacing all the timing chain components (regardless of year). I'd also install a new oil pump. water pump and thermostat while they're easy to get to.

Replace the rear main seal while the engine is out as well.
