What's up with the MPG on my 98 XLT?

V8's do tend to suck more gas than V6's. Every weekend I drive home from college which is 190 miles and my tank reads half when I get home. My 98 is a V6 SOHC so I think your gas mileage is normal.

Are you sure that the truck isn't stuck in four wheel drive? 4WD will definitely make a drastic reduction in your gas mileage. You should be able to go 150-175 miles by the time the gas gauge reads half full.

It's a AWD.

Some more 2 cents:
I drive 25 miles to work, and 25 miles home, and I use about 1/4 tank during the whole trip...... Im not putting in $80/wk, thats just nuts, I probably use $30/wk....but then again, i drive half as far, so that would be about $60/wk.... i must get better gas mileage :)
ive never averaged out my mileage.... looks like im gettin some pretty crappy gas mileage too... ive got the 4.0 OHV..............
Bwana Bob, how would his truck be stuck in 4wd? Doesnt the AWD only kick in when the rear tires slip ? Kinda like the control trac on the V6 Explorers...

And, how fast are you people driving to be at 2600 rpms constantly ? I can do 85-90 at less than 2600. i sit about 1900 at 65.. ( how long does it take to overheat a transmission at higher rpms for long distances ? what rpm?)

It could also be the gearing, if that hasnt already been mentioned..

I do about 1/4 tank from Mt.V. to Manhattan, usually I go to 47st & 5th ave. I am always the first out the block at the lights and with my ee sway bar I dont slow as much as I used to.(I do run 5w30 synthethic oil) I also take the fdr at around 3:00pm. When I get back home the computer reads about 18.5 miles per gallon.
I want to get better air and exhaust so I can get better mileage.
When I drive to Whiteplains though, I usually get about 20+. Its about 25 miles each way.
