Whats wrong with my explorer.....

ok it wont let me post in the 911 forum so here it goes.

ok i was going over a small hill and i got stuck, my front tires and back right was off the ground and my explorer was resting on the back left wheel and the 4x4 drive thing under the car (the long thing that goes front to back, dont know the name)

anyways i put the car in 4x4high and my back tires wouldnt move andthe 4x4 light was on..

am i not putting my car in 4x4properly or what else is wrong with myexplorer..

I think to get an answer you are going to need to be more specific. So from what i understand you were on 1 wheel? doesnt sound right unless you were resting on the frame or something. also were the wheels that were in the air spinning? and by the long thing that goes from front to back do you mean the driveshaft? was your car resting on that?
 






yeah it was resting on the driveshaft and most of the weight was on that and the back left wheel
 






sounds a bit bigger then a small hill to me!
 






This is why lockers or at least a limited-slip is good if you go off-road. I don't leave home (or the dealer) without it. :thumbsup:
 






Im not an expert, but if the front tires are off the groud, they don't do anything as far as traction. If only one rear wheel is on the groud and you don't have a limited slip or locker, it won't do anything either. Am I missing something?
 












its unstuck now but im wondering why my 4x4 wasnt working and im wondering what is the correct way to turn it on and how do i make sure that it is working properly
 






also even with 1 rear tire on the ground and an lsd, it probably cant bias enough of the power to the tire on the ground... a lim slip will aid in torque bias if both of the wheels have traction, but if 3 wheels are off the ground you are screwed.... on a run, i was able to wedge my truck on rockso n the diffs... none of my tires were touching the ground, all 4 were spining... rick had to winch me off the rocks....
 






You have no traction with three tires off the ground. Period. The one tire that was on the ground would not turn because its not a locked rear axle.

not sure about an o4, but it should just have a switch to put it into 4x4....
 






well yeah there is but in my tahoe it had to be in neutral and you had to wait a minute to get the 4x4 to kick in so im wondering what gear i need to be in
 






the explroer is shift on the fly

low range is the only special thing, but i dotn think they even have low range anymore
 






If you have a v6:

Press 4x4 high to lock it into 4x4. PRess 4x4 auto to go back to normal operation. In your situation, it probably already switched to 4x4 on its own. 4x4 auto will make the 4x4 kick in when there is a differnece in speed between the front and rear wheels.

If you want 4x4 low, put the tranny in neutral, and press the 4x4 low button. Wait until the dash light for 4x4 low goes on, then put the truck in gear. To get out of 4x4 low, put the truck back in neutral, press 4x4 high or 4x4 auto and wait for the 4x4 low dash light to go out. Put it back in gear and go. The truck will not go into 4x4 low by itself. You will hear and feel a clunk when switching into and out of 4x4 low. You may not fell anything when switching between 4x4 high and 4x4 auto.

The same way as the V6.

For Low, do you have to have your foot on the break too? In my F150 the truck had to be in neutral with your foot on the break.
 






Ive never tried it without my foot on the brake, so Im not sure. Makes sense though.
 






If the weight of the truck was resting on the driveshaft, there is no way you are gonna be able to turn the driveshaft to make any wheels turn. The front and rear driveshafts are "locked" together in the t/f case, so even if one front wheel was on the ground, you still probably wouldn't have moved an inch. And as stated, if only on wheel on the ground, you are SOL unless you have a true locker differential.
 






alright well thanks for all the help and im gonna make sure not to try any more hills like that one until i get some kind of ground clearance with a lift or something
