i have a 01 xlt 4wd x... im replacing my half shaft cv joint and wheel bearings... i have it all apart right now... when i took it apart my wheel bearings just fell apart... anyways, im getting it back together now...

question: is there a dust seal or something like that that goes between the bearing and the cv joint instead of the cv joint going against the sealed bearing? anyone got any idea? thanks!

There is supposed to be a grease seal on the back side of the hub and bearing assy. Are you replacing just the bearing, or the whole hub??

There is a dust shield and a bearing seal that goes inbetween the dust shield and the CV. The dust shield is just a metal cap that goes inside the hub assembly. The flange part faces towards the outside. If you are replacing the hub assembly, I would not suggest that you use the old dust shield, as it is lightly pressed in and once taken off, usually moves around when put in the new hub assembly. The dust shield cost around 15 bucks from Ford. It is easier to put it on the hub assembly before mounting the hub assembly to the steering knuckle. Once the CV is installed and before you attache the hub assembly to the steering knuckle you must put the bearing seal on, then the hub assembly.

enurb, the hub assemblies are not made to just replace the bearings. They are a self contained unit. I have heard of one person doing this, but I don't know how he did it.

I know that they are not made to replace just the bearing, but I've seen it done... not that I agree with it.

Can you tell us how it's done? I would like to know myself.

im pretty much replacing everything but the steering knuckle... hub bearings seals cv joint... but thanks guys youve answered my question!
