Wheel Bearings

My mechanic says I need front wheel bearings. He says that they cannot be regreased. Is that correct? They are enclosed? He is quoting me $260 per wheel plus 1 hour of labor. Does anyone know where I can buy the parts and take them to him or another mechanic to have them replaced? Is that a good idea? I am a complete novice, but it appears that I can get them for $175 from Autozone.com. Any input would be appreciated.

is it 2wd or 4wd? on the 2wd, it takes about 15 minutes per side (when drinking ) and the bearings are like $15 per side. and yes, they can be re-packed. sure he's not talking about something else?

www.Autopartsgiant.com has them for 144.20 a piece. It's not too tough of a job to do. Consider doing it yourself.

ahhhhh...... didnt know the 4wd/AWD was bearing/hub as an assembly. learn something new everyday, huh? damn, that sucks. it takes longer to get the wheel off of a 2wd than it does to get to the bearings... and their dirt cheap. guess he has a 4wd.

Can't you do it yourself and repack them, I did that when I switched to manual hubs. You have to take all the nuts off though. Check my website for instructions if you think you can do that.

EDIT: Oh, maybe that is just the first gen X's.

on the 95+ 4WD you have to buy the whole hub assembly for the bearings

As Yomie said, on 95+ explorers, the hub and bearing are one unit. Ford wants something like 250+ per side.

I ran into the same problem on my 98.
I was told that the bearing is a "non-serviceable" part that needs to be replaced as a whole unit for $$$. Fortunately my extended warranty covered it!

I have an extra brand new Ford wheel bearing assembly sitting here for sale if youre interested, make me an offer. They go for $250 new from Ford.

I will be doing this job myself very soon. There is a good write up on how to do it and it doesn't sound very difficult. Get the hubs from fordpartsnetwork.com if not from sideswipe. Also, you may just need to replace the seals and not the whole assy. I believe that's my problem. Mine squeal like crazy. Embarrassing.

ive done them both myself...i got them from napa for 160(i know the napa store owner). some come with new bake line, some dont...the napa ones do. the job took me about an hour cause i didnt have right tools so i hadda run around looking for them.

That sucks that the bearing/hub assembly is a one piece deal. Ford tried to make me do that on my '93, but I knew better. They quoted me at like $180 a side for parts plus labor. Ended up getting them to do it for under $300 both sides. Thats another one of Ford's great ideas to keep their shops in business so car owners won't do that work themselves!
