Hello,
This actually my first post so please excuse me if I'm asking a stupid question. I'm looking to lift my explorer 2 or 3 inches, and want to get some larger wheels for my explorer. I have the stock 93 rims on it and would like to know what tires and max sizes you can work with the rims. I'm looking for a tire that's decent on the highway, not really worried about noise or a 1 or 2 mpg loss, with a decent amount of tread for trail driving. Also if the stock rims can't be kept, what would you suggest..

Thanks
Ryan Fritts

Fritts,
I have a '93 also. I bet the biggest tire you can put with a 2-3" lift is 31x10.50 - maybe 32's, but I doubt it. I have 31's on my stock 15x7 rims. They work fine, but 15x8 is the recommended size for the tires. See my profile and site for tire info...

Ryan,
Don't worry about your rims. They can handle bigger tires than you could squeeze under your lift. I ran 33x12.5x15s on stock 15x7 rims for years before finally going to 15x8 rims. My truck came from the factory with 265/75R15, which is 31". You'll have lots of time to think about rims after the lift is on.:)

even 6" rims....

yes, you can even get some cheap 15X6 rims and put 31X10.5 tires on but your handling will suck. You'll get better handling and better off road capabilities with 15X8 rims and 31X10.5 tires. You can fit these on your stock ride but again, you'll be better off with a couple of inches of lift. Suspension lift recomended although body lift might work too.

Just my two cents,

This is only from experince my friend has a 92 2dr witha 3" body lift and 32x12.50 r15 even with the lift and 15x8 rims he had to trim fender flares. WE might install a 2.5" suspention lift by the end of the summer to help the tire clearance...

will 33x12.50 run on a 15x8 fine?

Ryan,

You are running a 15" rim and I suggest you buy a BFG A/T KO tire. It is an excellent tire for both on and off road. You lucked out with your 15" wheels because the tires will be cheaper. I would suggest not getting anything bigger than a 32" tire. The backspace on your stock rims will not be enough for a bigger tire. The backspace is the distance from the back of the RIM lip to the back of the wheel seat which is bolted to your axle. You would have to take your tire off to measure it. You may get rubbing with a 32" so if you aren't sure go with a 31" and you should be worry free with your lift. The 2-3" will not give you any more room to fit bigger tires because the main factor is side to side room for the front.

The suggested rim width for a 31x10.5R15 tire is 7.0-9.0" and a 32x11.5R15 is 8.0-10.0". I believe you are running 235/75R15's right now and that's a 29" tire.

Hope this helps
