When did the odometers change ?

Here's an easy question for the class

When did the odometers change from reading 99,999 miles to being capable of reading 999,999 miles ?

Our 91 show 87K but I know it's really 187K miles.
Our 94 shows 140K . So did they change in 92, 93 or 94 ?

Thanks for the info, I'm watching Ebay mileages and some of the first gen units gotta have the "one" in front of the reported miles.

Thats a good Question...up here in Canada, they show 7 digits, up to 999,999.9 KMs LOL

Don't know the answer completely, but my '92 only reads up to 99,999.9 miles.
