When its cold my hot air is luke warm

What would be the cause of this? Thermostat? My coolant is -20 freeze temp. If its a little warmer out I get hotter air comming out of the vent. and it also takes like 10 min to get warm air. Any ideas? The coolant temp sensor it out of range I do know that, so I need to replace it soon. is that the cause?

Once the engine warms up is the heater air hotter? Heater air is directly related to engine coolant temp so it makes sense that the colder it is outside the longer it takes to get hot air.

I guess what I'm trying to say, is that it never really blows HOT. my SHO, and every other car I am in has hot air after like 5 min. but not the explorer. If its below 40 degrees its never hot, just warm, even after like 20 min of driving. This shouldnt be. Theres a problem somewhere. The coolant isnt getting hot enough, so I was just wondering if I could replace the thermostat to fix it.

What does the coolant temp gauge read?

Based on the latest information, I would say it is the thermostat. I had the same problem last winter. No matter how far I drove the heater wouldn't blow hot. Luke warm at best. Once I changed the Tstat, 2 minutes until temp starts to climb and by 10 minutes it is pumping out hot air.

What thermostat should I go with? 180 or something? My temp gauge never even gets to the "N" in normal. It pulles a code for the coolant temp sensor out of range, so tomorrow I am replacing that. Thanks for the replies
