When the harmonic balancer starts to fail...

Can it come apart, and if it has rubber inserts (?) can they slip out and drag on the block?

This happened don my old Jeep grand wagoneer. The rubber inserts started to actually slip out and hit the engine!

Yes it can happen, I had the balancer come apart on my Lincoln Mark VIII a couple of years ago, also on a Trans Am.

It will cause the belt to mis-align and chirp like a bad idler pully.
